Oct 5 brought product page headers, search creatives, Asset Library, and a preview tool. A practical priority plan for indie apps—with DripScore as the worked example.

On October 5, 2026, Apple shipped new creative assets on the App Store: image and video placements for product page headers and search results, plus creative use in In-App Events, and two App Store Connect tools that matter more than the shiny pixels—the Asset Library and a product page preview that covers Dark Mode, devices, and orientations.

This is not "redesign every screenshot this weekend." Creative assets are optional, they complement app previews and screenshots, and they show in those new placements on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 and later (asset best practices; manage assets). On older systems, people still meet you through the classic screenshot / preview path—so that path still has to work.

This post is a practical plan for Western and global indie builders: which assets actually matter first when you don't have a marketing team, with DripScore (AI outfit rating) as the worked example.

Not legal or App Review advice. This is a developer's reading of Apple's public News, Help, and marketing docs as of October 7, 2026. Apple's live pages and App Review win if anything here drifts. Check App Store Connect for your own placements and statuses.

What actually shipped (short checklist)

Piece · What it is · Why indies should care
**Product page header** · First visual on the product page—image or video beyond screenshots · Brand / seasonal / "what's new" tone before the screenshot carousel ([News](https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=ljpl7kyn); [WWDC26 session 205](https://developer.apple.com/videos/play/wwdc2026/205/))
**Search results creative** · Image or video in Search instead of the default screenshot strip · Discovery surface—seen **before** the product page ([best practices](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/asset-best-practices/))
**In-App Event creatives** · Existing IAE card (16:9) + details (9:16) path, now in the same creative-asset family · Only if you have a real limited-time moment
**Asset Library** · Central hub for screenshots, previews, and creative assets; submit creatives **without** a new app version · Approve holiday art in October; Publish when you need it ([manage assets](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect/manage-app-information/manage-your-app-store-assets))
**Preview tool** · See header + search + metadata before review · Catch cropping, Dark Mode, and "looks broken on iPad" before App Review
**Also usable on** · Custom product pages, product page optimization, Apple Ads · Later leverage—not day-one homework ([What's New](https://developer.apple.com/app-store/whats-new/))

Apple teed this up at WWDC and again in the August 5 "get ready" note with templates. October 5 is when App Store Connect marked the workflow available (release notes).

Specs you should not guess

Pull sizes from Apple's Creative assets specifications—not from a random ASO thread. Images can't include alpha channels or transparencies.

Images

Placement · Aspect · Resolution · Formats
Product page header · 21:9 · **3840 × 1646** · .jpeg, .jpg, .png
Search results · 3:2 · Min **1920 × 1280**, max **3840 × 2560** · .jpeg, .jpg, .png
**Universal** (header + search) · 16:9 · **5244 × 2950** · **.png**

Videos (header & search creatives)

Placement · Aspect · Resolution · FPS · Length · Formats
Product page header · 21:9 · 3840 × 1646 · 30 or 60 · **5–30** seconds · .mov, .m4v, .mp4
Search results · 3:2 · Min 1920 × 1280, max 3840 × 2560 · 30 or 60 · **5–30** seconds · .mov, .m4v, .mp4

Apple notes that videos loop, search videos are muted by default and can't currently be unmuted, and product-page videos are muted by default but people can unmute (specs). Design silent-first (best practices).

Apple's specs table does not list a separate universal video size. For a small team, prefer a universal still (or dedicated header/search stills) before you invest in video.

In-App Event media (when you need it)

Event card 16:9 (min 1920×1080) and details 9:16 (min 1080×1920); IAE videos run 15–30 seconds—longer minimum than header/search creatives (specs; IAE media specs).

Download Apple's Figma / Photoshop / Pixelmator / Sketch templates from the best practices page rather than inventing safe areas. Exact inset pixels aren't published as a simple Help-table number—use the templates and the preview tool.

What indie apps should make first

Work top to bottom. Stop when you've spent the design hours you actually have.

1. Search results creative (or a universal PNG) — do this first

Apple's framing is blunt: the search result asset is the first thing people experience when they find you through the Search tab, before they ever reach your product page (best practices).

If you skip a search creative, Apple falls back to In-App Events, app previews, and screenshots—so your old screenshot game still matters. The new creative is how you take control of that first glance.

Indie bar: one clear idea. Purpose obvious at a glance. Prefer showing the firsthand experience over abstract brand mood.

Highest-leverage shortcut: ship one universal creative asset (16:9, 5244 × 2950 PNG) and use it for both header and search (Use header asset in search results when the asset is universal—manage assets). Two placements, one file, one review.

2. Product page header — same week if you can, or covered by universal

The header is the first visual on the product page (WWDC26 205). Apple's guidance: one clear idea, designed for a first-time visitor, not a collage of every feature (best practices).

If you already made a universal PNG for search, you're done for v1. Dedicated 21:9 headers are a polish pass when you have time.

3. Screenshot hygiene — still required, still the fallback

Creative assets do not retire screenshots. Keep a majority of screenshots showing the app in use per App Review guideline 2.3.3 (the guidance Apple linked from the Oct 5 news post). Lead with the core loop; overlays are fine if the UI stays visible.

4. Optional muted loop video — only after stills work

A 5–15 second silent loop can help, but only after your stills survive preview on iPhone and iPad. Remember search cannot unmute today (specs).

5. In-App Events — skip unless you have a real moment

IAE creatives need two aspect ratios and a time-bound event. Great for a launch week or seasonal drop. Wrong as the first creative you cut when you still lack a search asset.

6. PPO, custom product pages, Apple Ads — after the baseline exists

Once assets live in Asset Library, Apple lets you reuse them on custom product pages, product page optimization, and Apple Ads. WWDC also notes you can show keyword-tailored search creatives via custom product pages (session 205). That is a second-order move for indies with traffic worth splitting—not a day-one requirement.

Content rules that save a rejection

From asset best practices (and App Review / Advertising policies they point to):

  • Stay related to your app's general functionality—even when you go beyond in-use UI.
  • Don't put specific pricing, discounts, URLs, or © marks in the creative.
  • Don't invent unverifiable awards.
  • Don't reference other platforms or marketplaces.
  • Don't paste Apple designations (Editor's Choice, App of the Day, Design Award, etc.) into artwork—Apple already surfaces those.
  • Creative assets on the store must meet a 4+ age presentation even if your app's rating is higher.
  • Localize when you ship multiple languages.

Asset Library workflow (the part that actually saves time)

  1. Open Asset Library for your app → upload creative assets (and keep screenshots/previews there too).
  2. Submit creatives for review standalone—no new binary required. Standalone review is against your app's latest version (manage assets).
  3. Use Preview on the Header and Search Results tab (iPhone/iPad, orientations, languages).
  4. Place assets on a version submission or, once approved and your version is live, Browse Assets → Publish to swap the live header/search creative without a new app version.
  5. Optional: automate upload/submit with the App Store Connect API (mentioned in Help and WWDC).

That "approve in October, Publish for December" seasonal flow is exactly what Apple advertised on Oct 5 (News).

Worked example: DripScore

DripScore is a Lifestyle app for AI outfit rating—fit checks, Dress Me outfits from your own closet, Compare, Roast Mode, Style DNA, and share cards (dawnapps.co). Here's the small-team sequence I'd run—not a claim that these assets are already live.

Priority · Ship · DripScore brief
**P0** · One **universal** 5244×2950 PNG · Focal point: a real-phone outfit photo + a clear "AI outfit rating / fit check" read in under a second. Not a moodboard of every feature. Keep text short; design for the tightest crop the universal template allows.
**P0** · Preview in App Store Connect · Check Light/Dark, iPhone + iPad, portrait/landscape. Fix clipping before review.
**P1** · Screenshot order · Shot 1–3: Rate My Outfit / occasion verdict, Dress Me swipe, Compare. Majority must be **in use** ([2.3.3](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-review/guideline-reference/2-3-3-screenshots)).
**P2** · Optional 8–12s muted loop · Rate → one-line verdict → share card. Silent-first; no price callouts.
**P3** · Seasonal Asset Library batch · "Holiday party fits," "back-to-office," "date night"—approve early, Publish when the calendar hits.
**Skip for now** · In-App Event pair · Until there's a real limited window worth the 16:9 + 9:16 art.
**Later** · PPO / CPP · Test header variants; keyword-specific CPPs only if search volume justifies the split.

Same rules as every other indie app: search clarity first, brand header second (or free with universal), screenshots never abandoned.

One-week checklist

  • [ ] Read Creative assets specifications and download templates from asset best practices.
  • [ ] Decide: universal PNG vs dedicated header (21:9) + search (3:2).
  • [ ] Draft one sentence of value (what a stranger understands in one second).
  • [ ] Build the creative; keep focal point centered; no prices/URLs/platform logos/Apple badges.
  • [ ] Upload to Asset Library; run Preview (Dark Mode + devices + orientations).
  • [ ] Submit for approval (standalone or with a version).
  • [ ] Confirm screenshot set still has a majority in-use per 2.3.3.
  • [ ] After approval: place on header/search, or Publish swap on the live version.
  • [ ] Only then schedule IAE / PPO / Ads creatives if you have a reason.

Soft close

You do not need a cinematic trailer pack on day one. You need one honest search/header visual that makes the app's job obvious, a screenshot set that still shows the product, and Asset Library discipline so seasonal swaps don't wait on a binary.
